"The exact moment in time
I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to being a visual artist was
not clear to me. For as long as I can remember I have always been
painting and drawing. This is what I'm meant to do."
Born the youngest of three children to European
parents Julia grew up in a multi-cultured home on Vancouver Island,
Canada. As a child Julia had a well tuned imagination which she
has always retained and thus found her outlet; the need to pursue
a career as a visual communicator. At the age of 17, she had
her first exhibit which was displayed in her hometown of Port
Alberni, BC.
"I took my first baby steps in Austria
while on a family holiday, so in 1997 I moved to Europe deciding
to continue those steps one more time and follow my roots." Julia
explained. "The time I spent abroad was very influential
to my artistic growth."
The European cities filled with an abundace
of art galleries and museums only reassured Julia that she wanted
to commit herself to being a painter. In 1999, Julia returned
to Canada to study art formally for three years at The Victoria
College of Art (VCA). After VCA she went on to study graphic
and web design at The Corporate Development Institute (CDI) in
Vancouver, British Columbia. Upon graduation Julia worked as
a graphic designer and digital photographer in Vancouver.
In spring of 2004 Julia was offered the opportunity
to move to Salt Spring Island where her older sister lived and
she didn't hesitate for a moment.
"It was a perfect change for me to put
my focus on my true passion, painting as well as work for myself
as a freelance graphic designer." she explained.
Wanting to travel again in the spring of 2005
Julia moved to Seoul, South Korea where she found inspiration
for her artwork in the Asia culture.
In December of 2005 Julia took part in a successful
exhibition called "Exposure" at Gallery Cott in Seoul.
She displayed her new intimate, figurative series with 11 other
Korean and International artists.
In April of 2006 Julia showed her work in her
second Asian exhibition with a talented group of 29 Koreans and
5 international artists at Galerie GAIA in Seoul. The exhibition
was called "Better Together".
At this current time Julia is creating her new
painting series back on the west coast of Canada. She plans to
return to South East Asia in the Fall of 2006.
